On Wednesday 8th February an elderly couple in Maidstone were cold called by a man. 30 years ago the couple had paid for their house to have a Texacote waterproof coating, and the guarantee had just expired. The man, ‘John Webb’, claimed that his business, Sureguard, had taken over the other company’s Texacote guarantees.  He fraudulently gave his business address as Civic Centre,Silver Street,Enfield - this is actually the address of Enfield Council. This message relates to this individual trading as Sureguard and not any other business of a similar name.

‘John Webb’ was described as quite tall, slim and aged in his 40’s.  He inspected the house and claimed it was in need of urgent repair. He then returned the following day with 4 workmen and started working on the property, finishing on the 18th February. No information about cancellation rights had been given. The man insisted on an upfront payment of £18,000, which the couple paid, and applied constant pressure for more money.  The final bill was for £37,800.

If you come across these people do not deal with them but contact Kent Trading Standards (contact details below).  We are also interested in speaking to the driver of a white van with registration number LS07 LDF.

In most cases if you agree to buy anything costing over £35 from a trader at your door, the law gives you a 7 day "cooling off" period to change your mind.  The trader must give you a written cancellation notice if you agree to have any work done.  Failure to give this notice is a crime.

If you are considering work in or on your property it is always best to get at least a couple of quotes from traders. You can find reputable traders on the "Buy With Confidence" good trader scheme run by us.  Our officers vet all traders on the scheme for trustworthiness and to ensure they comply with consumer protection laws.  Or, ask for recommendations from friends or family.

If you have any information about these people of if you want details of Buy With Confidence traders call Trading Standardsvia Consumer Direct on 0808 156 2256.  You can also visit www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk for a list of traders.
